Canton comparison
The same details in all 26 cantons, calculated for the municipality in brackets.
Note: The calculator estimates the ordinary taxes for 2026 for one municipality per canton, usually the cantonal capital. In other municipalities, the municipal part changes with the tax multiplier. When starting from your net salary, it uses the deductions of the federal tax (flat-rate professional expenses, married couple deduction, child deduction, insurance premiums, pillar 3a). Some cantons have their own deductions, and children often lower the tax more there. It calculates church tax with one rate per canton and only on income. If you pay withholding tax, it has already been deducted from your salary. Above CHF 120'000 a year, or if you request it, you file a tax return and are assessed like everyone else. The figures come from the tax engine of the Geldfuchs app and are checked against official tariffs, but they do not replace a tax assessment. No tax advice.
How tax works in Switzerland
Three taxes on the same income
You pay income tax to the federal government, to the canton and to the municipality. The federal government has the same tariff for all of Switzerland. Canton and municipality use the cantonal tariff and multiply it by their tax multiplier. That is why the same person can pay twice as much in one canton as in another.
From net salary to taxable income
- Professional expenses: a flat rate of 3% of the net salary, at least CHF 2'000 and at most CHF 4'000 per person.
- Pillar 3a: contributions up to CHF 7'258 per person with a pension fund are fully deductible.
- Married couples and children: for the federal tax CHF 2'800 for married couples and CHF 6'800 per child. The cantons have their own, often higher deductions.
- Insurance premiums: for the federal tax a flat amount of up to CHF 1'800 for single people and CHF 3'700 for married couples, plus CHF 700 per child. Health insurance premiums alone are usually higher, so the calculator fills in this amount.
- Other deductions: commuting costs, meals, further training, childcare and donations. It is best to collect receipts all year.
Taxes in your budget
The final bill for 2026 only comes after the tax return in 2027, and many cantons ask for provisional payments before that. So set aside a twelfth every month or transfer it as a monthly instalment to the tax office. The budget calculator shows you what is left after that. How to lower your taxes legally is explained in our article Saving taxes in Switzerland.
Frequently asked questions about taxes
How accurate is the tax calculator?
The federal and cantonal tariffs are stored exactly. It gets less precise with deductions and where you live: the calculator uses the federal deductions and one municipality per canton. For your own municipality, the tax calculator of the Federal Tax Administration gives the exact amount.
What is taxable income?
Your income after all deductions. The tax office calculates your tax on this amount. You find it on your last tax assessment. Enter it above under «I know my taxable income» for a more precise result.
Why do I pay so much less in another canton?
Every canton has its own tariff and every municipality its own tax multiplier. Zug, Schwyz or Nidwalden are the cheapest for most incomes, Geneva, Neuchâtel or Bern are rather expensive. On the other hand, rents and land prices are often higher in the low-tax cantons.
When do I have to pay the 2026 taxes?
Most cantons send a provisional bill during the year, usually due in autumn or at the end of the year. Many allow instalments and pay interest on early payments. The final bill follows after the 2027 tax return, then you either pay the difference or get money back.
Does the calculator include church tax?
Yes, if you choose a state church under «Religion». The calculator uses one rate per canton for the municipality it shows next to the canton. The Reformed and the Catholic Church usually differ only slightly. Church tax on wealth is not included. In Geneva, Neuchâtel, Ticino and Vaud there is no compulsory church tax for private individuals.
I pay withholding tax. Does the calculator help me?
With withholding tax, your employer deducts the tax directly from your salary, including church tax. The calculator shows what you would pay with an ordinary assessment. That matters if you earn more than CHF 120'000 a year or request a subsequent ordinary assessment, for example to deduct pillar 3a contributions.
