Frequently asked questions about savings goals

How do I calculate my savings rate?

From your savings goal, current capital, timeframe and expected return, the required monthly savings rate is derived using the annuity formula. Higher returns or more time reduce the required rate considerably – compound interest works for you.

Which savings method suits which timeframe?

Under 3 years: savings account or fixed deposit – security over returns. 3–10 years: mixed portfolio with bonds and equities (50/50 or 60/40). Over 10 years: high equity share with low-cost ETFs (historically 5–7 % returns). Pillar 3a for tax-advantaged tied savings – see our Pillar 3a calculator.

What if the return is lower than planned?

Market fluctuations are normal. Rule of thumb: calculate conservatively and build in a buffer. If you plan for 5 % but only achieve 4 %, you'll be short by 10–20 % depending on the timeframe. Either increase your savings rate or extend the timeframe. Tip: review and adjust every 2–3 years.

Should I save monthly or once a year?

Mathematically almost the same. In practice: monthly is more disciplined and you benefit from the cost-averaging effect when investing in securities (you buy cheaper during market dips). Setting up a standing order and forgetting about it is by far the most common success strategy.
