1Step 1

Compare: what does the same cover cost elsewhere?

Basic insurance pays for the same things at every insurer. The Health Insurance Act requires it. Every insurer has to accept you, without health questions. So when you switch, only the premium matters.

  1. Have your 2027 premium notice readyIt shows your new monthly premium. Insurers send it out by the end of October.
  2. Compare on priminfo.admin.chThe Swiss government's premium calculator shows every insurer with the approved premiums. Enter your postcode, year of birth, deductible, model and accident cover.
  3. Enter both amounts hereOn priminfo, choose the same deductible, the same model and the same accident cover as today. Otherwise you are comparing different offers. The models are now called PRAXIS (doctor's practice), TEL_DIG (by phone or online), PHARM (pharmacy) and FLEX (flexible).

Geldfuchs doesn't recommend any insurer and earns nothing from your switch. priminfo is the official comparison of the Federal Office of Public Health.

Cancel: your letter in five minutes

Enter everyone whose basic insurance you are cancelling. The letter is written next to the form as you type. Your details stay in this browser. We don't store or send anything.

Your letter is in German

Swiss health insurers work in German, French or Italian, not in English. That's why the letter is written in German, which insurers all over Switzerland understand. Is your insurer in French- or Italian-speaking Switzerland? Create the letter in French or Italian instead.

Insured people

You can cancel for children under 18 in the same letter.

Your address
Current insurer

You'll find the address on your premium notice or your policy.

New insurer optional

Only if you have already signed up there. Then the letter names it.

What happens next

  1. Print it. Every adult signs by hand.
  2. Send it by registered post or A-Post Plus, ideally by .
  3. Keep the receipt until your insurer has confirmed the cancellation.

3Step 3

Deadlines: what has to be done by when

These dates apply to switching on . What counts is always the date your insurer receives it.

  1. Now

Compare and choose a new insurer

Sign up with the new insurer. It only takes a few minutes online. For basic insurance, they have to accept you.

  2. Send the cancellation by registered post

The FOPH recommends sending it by mid-November. Registered post or A-Post Plus gives you proof.

  3. Deadline: the cancellation has to be there

What counts is when your insurer receives it, not the postmark. This is also the last day to ask for a lower deductible or to leave a family doctor, HMO or telemedicine model.

  4. Check the new insurer's confirmation

Your old insurance only ends once the new insurer has confirmed it is taking you on. If the confirmation is missing, ask the new insurer.

  5. Pay overdue bills

Anything you received a reminder for by has to be paid by the end of the year. Otherwise you stay with your old insurer. You can still ask for a higher deductible until this day.

  6. January

    Switch your payments

Have your new insurance card ready. Move your eBill or standing order to the new insurer and delete the old one.

Deadlines in your calendar

Five dates with a reminder the day before. Works with Apple, Google and Outlook.

All other money dates, from paying into Pillar 3a to save taxes and switching health insurer to AHV, are in the financial calendar.

Supplementary insurance

It continues separately and has its own deadlines. For supplementary insurance, an insurer may ask health questions and turn you down. Only cancel it once a new insurer has accepted you in writing.

Change your deductible or model

You can do this even if you stay with your insurer. Ask for a lower deductible by and a higher one by . Leaving a family doctor, HMO or telemedicine model (now called PRAXIS, TEL_DIG, PHARM or FLEX on priminfo) for the standard model also works if you tell your insurer by . You can move into one of these models at your insurer at any time.

Frequently asked questions

Will I lose any cover if I switch?

No. What basic insurance pays for is set by law. It is the same at every insurer. The only differences are the premium and the service.

Can the new insurer turn me down?

Not for basic insurance. Every insurer has to accept you, whatever your age or health. For supplementary insurance, an insurer may ask health questions and turn you down.

I have a family doctor, HMO or telemedicine model or a high deductible. Can I switch?

Yes, at the end of the year, if your insurer receives the cancellation by . Switching on 1 July is only possible with the standard model and the ordinary deductible, that is CHF 300 for adults and CHF 0 for children. Then the cancellation has to reach your insurer by 31 March.

Who has to sign?

Every adult whose basic insurance is being cancelled. For children under 18, a legal representative signs, usually a parent. The letter has a separate signature line for every adult.

Can I also cancel online or by email?

Some insurers also accept cancellations in their customer portal. Keep the confirmation safe if you do. A registered letter is still the safest option, because it proves your insurer received it.

What if I have unpaid bills with my insurer?

Pay them quickly. Anything you received a reminder for by has to be paid by . Otherwise you stay with your old insurer.

What happens to my details?

Nothing. The letter is created in your browser. We don't see your details, we don't store them and we don't send them anywhere. When you close the page, everything is gone.
